In today's world, data is everywhere; but it's only useful once you know how to analyze and understand it. Before you can tackle and understand data science concepts like machine learning, you need to have an understanding of several statistical concepts. Statistics for Data Science gives you a hands-on introduction to the concepts you’ll need to be successful in learning data science. This course is helpful for preparing students who have a limited background in statistics for our Data Science Bootcamp, but is open to all who are interested in hands-on learning of descriptive and inferential statistics for the field of data science.

This course is for you if...

  • You are looking for a statistics refresher.
  • You are a data analyst who wants to explore statistics to see if data science interests you.
  • You are applying to our Data Science Bootcamp and need to learn fundamental statistics concepts.
  • You are planning a data science self-study program.
  • You want to explore your aptitude for statistics as a precursor to doing predictive analytics.
  • What will the course cover?

    • Exploratory Data Analysis
Learn about the different types of variables and how to analyze them through visualizations and numerical summaries.
    • Probability
Understand the basic concepts of probability theory, conditional probability, and Bayes’ Theorem along with the most common types of probability distributions used in data science.
    • Estimation
Learn the science of point and confidence interval estimation, sampling distributions, and standard error.
    • Statistical Experiments / Significance Testing
Learn to test for statistical significance using both classical hypothesis testing and bootstrapping and permutation tests.
    • Least Squares Regression
Learn the standard approach to regression analysis to find the best-fit line for your data.
    • Logistics Regression
Understand how to build and evaluate models to predict the probability of a categorical outcome.

How will you learn the material?

    Live Online Instruction
Introduction to new topics will be covered by instructors who are working data professionals. Statistical concepts will be introduced through in-class lectures.
    Mentored Exercises
Apply your understanding of statistical concepts by doing. Instructors will offer guidance as needed.
    Real-world Data
You will use Python and Jupyter Notebooks to apply the concepts to real-world data to further your understanding.
    What is required?
    • Personal Laptop (No Chromebooks please. You will need at least 5GB of free hard drive space.)
    • Must be 18+ years of age
    • While prior exposure to descriptive statistics would be helpful, it is not required.
    • This class is not required for admission to our Data Science Bootcamp, but may be suggested if you do not have recent experience or education in descriptive statistics.
